I left Asheville School at the end of the 1960 academic year because I had flunked chemistry and didn’t want to spend the summer in summer school. I returned to my hometown of Greensboro, NC and attended and graduated from Walter Hines Page High School.
I attended Duke University, receiving an undergraduate degree in accounting in 1965 and a JD degree from Duke Law School in 1968. I married Mary “Wallace” Clement in the summer of 1963 between my sophomore and junior year. Our first child Brad was born in 1968. (Brad is married, has two children and lives in Fayetteville, GA.) After law school graduation, we moved to Atlanta where I worked in the tax department of Price Waterhouse & Co. (now PricewaterhouseCoopers). Our daughter Betsey was born in 1971. (She is now Betsey Brooks Mullikin and lives in Greensboro, NC with her two children.)
I turned my attention to a real estate career in 1973 and worked as Chief Financial Officer and General Counsel for Peachtree Corners, Inc. – developer of a large portion of an area in northeast Atlanta known as Peachtree Corners. Next, I was President of The Landmarks Group – developer of office buildings in Georgia and Florida. Our most notable development consists of two office towers at the intersection of I-285 and GA 400 in north Atlanta. Locals refer to them as the “King & Queen”. I retired in 1986, spent a period of time RV traveling, owning a race car preparation shop and driving vintage and SCCA race cars for a hobby.
In 1996 I went back to work as Chief Executive of Beacon Properties Southeast (Atlanta) and Beacon Properties Mid-Atlantic (Washington, DC) which were divisions of Beacon Properties, a Boston-based REIT. We were bought out by Equity Office Properties in 1997 and I retired again. I spent the next year as caregiver for Wallace who had several bouts with breast cancer culminating in a stem cell transplant at Duke Hospital. She died in early 1999.
I met my current wife, Leigh Ginter Clark, (born and raised in West Chester, PA) in 2001 and we were married in 2002. Leigh was widowed with two daughters, Haley and Hannah Leigh, whom I have adopted. Haley is in middle school and Hannah Leigh is in high school. Yes, I’m doing it all over again and loving every moment! We live in the north Atlanta suburb of Milton, GA. We are evangelical Christians and are members of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church. Leigh coaches girls’ lacrosse for our high school feeder team and does a lot of church-related activities. My community service includes board member and finance committee chair for Saint Joseph’s Hospital of Atlanta, vice-chair of the investment committee of Catholic Health East and board member and treasurer of the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation.
I have continued in the real estate profession in Atlanta with consulting and brokerage services in the industrial and office sectors. I am also a founding principal of Synergy Resolution Services (see www.SynergyResolutionServices.com). Synergy provides advisory services to banks with regard to distressed real estate and also joint ventures with or purchases from banks distressed real estate that needs resolution.
